Description

Introduction International students make an important financial contribution to the Higher Education economy, and it is for this reason that there is fierce competition for their recruitment, both internationally and domestically among Higher Education institutions (Cushner and Karim 2004; Ryan and Carroll 2005). In the UK, international students make up approximately 13% of all university students, and on average they contribute around 8bn [pounds sterling] annually to the national economy (MacLeod 2006). It is also often stated that international education offers an opportunity for institutions to diversify their education product: internationalisation of the curriculum and of the university campus is a valued by-product of the presence of growing numbers of international students (Leask 2005). This is seen as a benefit to domestic students, many of whom will go on to work in international companies, and who will therefore benefit from a growth in intercultural knowledge and competence. Aside from the impact of international education on the receiving institution, attention is increasingly paid by researchers to the implications of the study abroad for students themselves: it is well acknowledged in the literature on the international sojourn, defined by Ward et al. (2001) as temporary between-society contact, that exposure to a new culture has transformative potential. This is discussed by Greg Madison in his paper published in Existential Analysis (2006), which argues that 'voluntary migrants' use the sojourn as an opportunity for self-actualisation and for learning about new cultures. Similarly, Hayes (2007) finds that distance from the home culture allows sojourners to discover their life priorities: the terms 'being at home' and becoming oneself' are used to refer to the living of an authentic life.
